France: 250 breweries could close down this year, study finds
Abound 10% of France’s breweries face potential closure in 2024, a poll by the National Syndicate of Independent Breweries (Syndicat National des Brasseries Independentes - SNBI) has revealed.
The syndicate polled 2,500 craft and independent brewing companies with responses received from 570. “The results of this survey are very worrying for the future of our sector. 1 of 10 breweries has responded that they will likely close for good in 2024, which represents 250 expected closures,” SNBI said.
Other findings were:
2 out of every 3 breweries (67%) consider the financial health of their enterprise as average or bad;
72.7% of respondents are worried by their financial situation (with 30.8% considering it to be ‘average’, 21.3% - ‘bad’, and 20.6% - ‘very bad’ or ‘catastrophic’);
40% of the polled breweries reported a decline in turnover;
60% said they were worried by the market situation in the short term;
62% confirmed they were worried by the situation in the long term;
92.4% of respondents blame their difficulties on the increased prices of glass bottles;
76% said they were badly affected by soaring electricity costs;
50.3% cited the increase of malt prices;
46.6% - the increases of cardboard prices;
32.7% - the increase of petrol price;
32.7% - the increase of the price of gas.
“The results of the poll speak for themselves. Our small enterprises are in danger, 67% of the brewers are struggling with financial difficulties, 60% are worried in short-term and 10% anticipate a closure in 2024,” SNBI said in a statement.
“Not just the brewing sector, but the entire supply chain are affected. In view of the findings, the president of SNBI calls again for the government to support the craft and independent breweries.”
